The saving of Copped Hall has been described by a number times as a miracle. In reality, it was achieved by a great deal of hard work against overwhelming odds. (Website here)
‘When I drive up to Copped Hall and see the mansion standing in its own isolation – but now with new windows and the roof over the south side completed – I am filled with great elation at such restoration success. For some years the roof will remain covered by temporary metal sheeting – until we can afford to pay for the slates! The roof also stabilises the chimneys which are vulnerable since the 1917 fire. The one chimney which collapsed in 1996 is shortly to be rebuilt so the mansion will then have its full complement of chimneys.
The Trust was enabled to carry out this work by a combination of grant funding and generous private funding. The initial grant from the Country Houses Foundation of £114,700 attracted £50,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation and then further help from private funders.
Over £117,000 was received by the Trust during the previous financial year from private donors. Our thanks must go to Alan Cox and our Treasurer, Isobel Burt, who deal quite amicably with the financial matters.
