Growing Vegetables the Organic Way, a seminar by Robert Wiseman (Bancroft Gardens Ltd)

The seminar will be held at ITEC Learning Technologies, Burnt Mills Road, Basildon SS13 1DQ
6:30 to 8:30pm Tuesday 2nd July 2013

The session will involve both practical and theoretical tuition in organic gardening,

The following topics will be covered:

  • General introduction to organic principles, understanding the soil and soil types, investigating composts and manures. Soil fertility, sourcing manure, making your own compost
  • Planning and layout, principles of crop rotation, raised beds, dig or no dig options
  • Planning the crops to be grown. Propagation from seed. Sourcing seed, choosing varieties, composts, sowing techniques, modules and equipment
  • Protected crops. Choosing a tunnel, fleece, cloches, suitable crops/varieties, weed control, green manures
  • Methods of pest and disease control & companion planting
  • Herb and fruit production, crop planning, winter crops 

This seminar may also include the following practical activities:

  • Mixing compost, sowing seeds, setting up a propagation area. Start ground preparation on site, taking a soil sample
  • Pricking out and potting on seedlings
  • Sowing outdoor crops directly, incorporating manure, making beds
  • Planting out module crops
  • Weeding, mulching, making a compost heap/worm compost bin
  • Creating a herb garden
