Growing Vegetables the Organic Way, a seminar by Robert Wiseman (Bancroft Gardens Ltd)
The seminar will be held at ITEC Learning Technologies, Burnt Mills Road, Basildon SS13 1DQ
6:30 to 8:30pm Tuesday 2nd July 2013
The session will involve both practical and theoretical tuition in organic gardening,
The following topics will be covered:
- General introduction to organic principles, understanding the soil and soil types, investigating composts and manures. Soil fertility, sourcing manure, making your own compost
- Planning and layout, principles of crop rotation, raised beds, dig or no dig options
- Planning the crops to be grown. Propagation from seed. Sourcing seed, choosing varieties, composts, sowing techniques, modules and equipment
- Protected crops. Choosing a tunnel, fleece, cloches, suitable crops/varieties, weed control, green manures
- Methods of pest and disease control & companion planting
- Herb and fruit production, crop planning, winter crops
This seminar may also include the following practical activities:
- Mixing compost, sowing seeds, setting up a propagation area. Start ground preparation on site, taking a soil sample
- Pricking out and potting on seedlings
- Sowing outdoor crops directly, incorporating manure, making beds
- Planting out module crops
- Weeding, mulching, making a compost heap/worm compost bin
- Creating a herb garden
