Just to let you know about a few new campaigns/competitions and resources in the pipeline and some ideas for last minute pre-hol planting:
– you could sow carrots/chard for cropping on your return. Also good to sow spinach/rocket as soon as you’re back in September.

“I DON’T DIG PEAT”
Get behind Garden Organic’s fight for peat-free gardening and help us make a change by saying ‘I Don’t Dig Peat’. (www.idontdigpeat.org.uk )
In the UK, more than 24 million wheelbarrows of peat are used every year by amateur gardeners. Despite peat being used so readily, most people don’t realise the destructive impact this has on the wider environment, including the homes of birds, insects and plants, not to mention the release of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

BBC3 COMPETITION – deadline 5 August
ARE YOU A SKILLED GARDENER BETWEEN THE AGES OF 16 and 25?
BBC THREE’s ‘Young Talent of the Year’ is the show celebrates the millions of young British workers whose skills won’t win them a million pound recording contract, but deserve recognition nonetheless!
We’re looking for Gardeners between the ages of 16 and 25, who can be true ambassadors for their trade, are up for a challenge and want to showcase their skills to the world.
The programme is now in it’s third series and previously we’ve unearthed young and talented Butchers, Fishmongers, Plumbers and Chefs, to name but a few. This year we have five brand new categories: Carpenters, Farmers, Gardeners, Tailors and Bakers.
We are currently scouring the country to find the best young Gardeners out there. Eventually 100 will be invited to an audition. Here they’ll face a written test on their professional expertise, and be interviewed by an industry expert to ensure they have the knowledge and potential to be BBC Three’s Young Gardener of the Year!
Only twenty will then be selected to go forward in the selection process. Here they’ll have to complete a hands on skills test and our judges will then decide which four will go forward to the filming of the show in September. The final four will face challenges based on the skills of their trade. Eventually one will walk away with the recognition, trophy and title of ‘BBC Three’s Young Gardener of the Year.
